iBamboo speakers rock your iPhone tunes sans energy

There are all kinds of eco-friendly iPhone, iPod, Android device, and other portable music player speakers out there, but none of them can amplify the volume of your digital tunes without requiring battery or A/C power…except the iBamboo.
The iBamboo is a project from the mind of designer Anatoliy Omelchenko and is oh-so-close to becoming a real product.
As of this writing, 212 backers on the project’s Kickstarter page have pledged $6,765 or the $10,000 needed to get production of the iBamboo started. If the $10,000 mark isn’t hit by Saturday July 9th, the project will not be funded. So if you like the idea, consider pledging some support — a pledge of $25 will reserve you one of the 1st iBamboo speakers too.

How does the iBamboo work?

Anatoliy says,
Merging the latest high tech with the simple beauty of nature, iBamboo is a 100% eco-friendly speaker made from a whole length of bamboo. The natural resonance of the bamboo amplifies the sound produced by the iPhone’s built-in speaker. The sound waves move in two directions at once, intensifying the stereo effect created by the iPhone.
Bamboo is stronger, more flexible and forgiving than plastic or some metals. A foot-long, whole link of bamboo requires only a few modifications to make it an iPhone-compatible speaker. The top of the bamboo is precision-cut to create an opening that, in concert with the natural construction of bamboo, serves as a fitted dock that fixes the iPhone in place.
iBamboo is a practical and aesthetically pleasing device, with a simple design. It is machined, laser-cut, and then finished by hand, which allows for fast, efficient, eco-friendly production.

Improving sound quality and aesthetics

Omelchenko goes on to say that the iBamboo won’t only amplify the sound from your iPhone 4, but will also perfect the acoustics by emphasizing the full spectrum of the music too.
Another added bonus of the iBamboo is that it actually looks awesome…as I’m sure you’ll agree. Using it to crank your tunes means not having a clunky electronic device sitting on your desk, but rather the natural bamboo will improve the feng shui of the space in which you place it.

Eco-Snobbery Sucks approved

If the projections stay the same, the designer expects the iBamboo to cost between $25-$30. That seems very reasonable to me given the availability of bamboo and the minimal modifications needed to craft it into the iBamboo. The fact that Anatoliy doesn’t plan on charging a pointless “green tax” tells me that this product would pass the eco-snobbery test with flying colors.
